Match engineers across tools with smarter author merging

Engineers often have accounts in several tools: your code hosting platform, issue tracker, AI tools, and more.

We’ve improved how Swarmia merges authors (previously called contributors) so more accounts from your connected tools end up on the right person. That means pull requests, reviews, commits, and issues are attributed correctly, and your team and individual data is more accurate.

How it works

Swarmia automatically merges two authors when they share an email address and their accounts complement each other. For example, if one author has a GitHub account and another has the same work email from your HR system, we combine them into one.

When a match is less certain, Swarmia suggests a merge instead and lets you decide. Suggestions come from shared email addresses that don’t meet the rules for an automatic merge, or from matching GitHub accounts, names, usernames, or names in email addresses.

For example:

  • An engineer who commits under a personal email shows up as a suggested match with their work identity.
  • Two authors with the same name but different GitHub accounts get flagged for you to review, instead of being merged automatically. If they’re two different people, reject the suggestion and Swarmia won’t propose it again.

Automatic merging runs every day and whenever you connect a new integration, so there’s nothing you need to turn on.

Some numbers may shift as a result, including historical data. If someone gets more work attributed to them, their team’s pull request count can go up, for example. For most organizations the change is small.

How to get started

Go to settings → teams & authors → authors. If Swarmia has found potential duplicates, a banner shows how many suggestions need your review. Select start review, then choose yes to merge, no to reject, or skip for now for each pair.

For anything the suggestions miss, open an author and select edit. From there, you can merge them with another author, or move or remove a single account. You can’t move or remove an author’s only account or an account someone uses to sign in.
